About the conference

A letter from the host

The biannual conference of the International Mines Rescue Body will, of necessity, take quite a different form this year.

As hosts, we recognise that the COVID pandemic, which is sadly impacting human health around the world, has also made international travel impossible with any certainty for the scheduled dates of our conference.

You’ll remember in September 2020, we shared the news that, in consultation with the IMRB Board, we had decided to cancel the physical conference.  Our immediate priority at that point was to look at what other avenues would enable us to maintain the strong ties that exist within the international mines rescue community.

One of the founding principals of the IMRB is to improve mines rescue safety and practice around the world through passing on information and learnings about current mines rescue initiatives, training techniques and equipment developments. Our conference is the primary means of bringing everyone together to facilitate such sharing of knowledge.

To leave a 4-year gap between the fantastic 2019 conference in Colombia and the scheduled 2023 conference in South Africa would risk losing this vital forum. Even more so, it risked breaking down the bonds and camaraderie formed between mines rescue professionals around the world.

QMRS therefore committed to hosting a virtual conference on 7-8 September 2021. The platform we’ve selected allows for interactive presentations from around the world, and enables participants to network with mines rescue comrades and meet with suppliers of mines rescue equipment in as-near-to reality as is possible.

In addition to the conference, we’ll be hosting the Executive meeting of the IMRB utilising the same platform on 6 September.

I very much looking forward to sharing more news about our conference throughout the year, and to hosting you all in September at this essential event which plays such a vital role in sustaining quality mines rescue services around the world.

Yours in Mines Rescue

David Carey
